Heart disease: A deadly risk of the job

For years, research has shown that sudden cardiac arrest and heart disease are leading causes of death among first responders.

That’s why Rebound Vitality is beginning the journey to change cardiovascular care for public safety workers.

Why your heart health needs special attention

Many factors impact heart health for public safety workers, including stress, physical exertion, heat, dehydration and environmental hazards. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of on-duty death among firefighters. Law enforcement is a high-stress occupation that increases the prevalence and incidence of heart disease.

It makes sense to act early to identify factors that put you at risk for cardiac disease.

We’ve done that through our innovative Cardiology program.

Assessment

We analyze your risk of heart disease through the lens of sports medicine, which factors in the physical nature of your job.

Vitality’s Cardiology Risk Management Assessment is unique because we screen for factors that have an impact on the cardiovascular systems of public safety workers.

If our assessment indicates concern, we will immediately refer you to a specialist.

Diagnosis

Vitality sports cardiologists are cut from a different cloth.

They understand the grueling physical nature of your jobs, as well as other factors that can contribute to heart issues, including shift work, sleep disruptions, stress, sudden bursts of activity and the strain of witnessing violence.

Your specialist may recommend: additional tests, prescriptions, procedures, as well as exercise and nutrition.

Support

In addition to your sports cardiologist recommendations, Vitality can help with exercise and nutrition.

Our Vitality training program will have a recommended series of exercises and workouts to support heart health.

And, we’ve partnered with Trifecta, the organic meal delivery service for athletes that offers customizable plans to meet an individual’s nutrition needs.

Our Cardiology Partner: Dr. Elizabeth Hill Dineen

Dr. Elizabeth Dineen is a cardiologist at UCI Health and an assistant professor in Cardiology at the School of Medicine at University of California-Irvine. Dr. Dineen specializes in preventative cardiology and cardiopulmonary testing. Her clinical interests include integrative cardiology as well as sports and exercise heart care.

Why is Rebound Vitality partnering with a heart specialist who researches and treats athletes? The reason is because public safety jobs require similar exertions as those of the elite athlete, which means Dr. Dineen and other sports medicine-trained specialists understand the rigors and hazards of your jobs, which can lead to better care.

Sports cardiology incorporates many aspects of cardiology, such as cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, structural heart disease and exercise physiology.

Dr. Dineen is board certified in echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and internal medicine. She is also an active member of the American Heart Association and the committee on Sports and Exercise for the American College of Cardiology (ACC), as well as its California chapter.
